SALT LAKE CITY — Three people were critically injured in a two-vehicle accident Saturday night at a Redwood Road intersection. Six others were sent to the hospital after an eight-vehicle crash earlier in the day.
At around 7:30 p.m., Salt Lake Police Lt. Robin Heiden said a pickup truck headed south on Redwood Road at the 500 South intersection struck a passenger car after it turned in front of it.
Heiden said all three people in car the sustained critical injuries as a result of the crash.
She added it appeared the truck was headed through the intersection on a green light when the car turned to go west in front of it.
The accident remains under investigation.
A two-vehicle crash in Taylorsville earlier in the day sent six people to the hospital, two in critical condition.
The eight-vehicle crash occurred at around 10:15 a.m. at 2200 West 4700 South. Unified police detective Jared Richardson said it appears all the vehicles were traveling westbound when one car rear-ended the others.
One person was thrown from a vehicle in the ensuing collision, and another had to be extricated from a vehicle, Richardson said.
"We believe that the driver of the offending vehicle may have some contributing factors — maybe alcohol and/or drugs in their system — that may have contributed to this," Richardson said.
He said investigators were also looking into other possible factors like the weather, speed or distracted driving that could have played a role in the crash.
