LAYTON — Police fired beanbag rounds and used a Taser on a man who they say pulled out a knife and advanced on them late Thursday near Hill Air Force Base.

Robert Holladay, 44, was located by an officer on Hill Field Road near U.S. 193 shortly after 11 p.m. after police learned he had been making violent threats against a man he accused of stealing money from him, according to Layton Police Sgt. Kyle Schroeder.

The officer attempted to calm down Holladay, who was intoxicated, Schroeder said. But Holladay allegedly raised a knife, causing the officer to retreat and wait for backup.

Holladay continued along Hill Field Road, approaching the south gate of Hill Air Force Base, when additional officers arrived, according to the sergeant. Holladay allegedly ignored officers' commands and continued advancing on them while holding the knife.

Holladay was shot with beanbag rounds, but initially didn't appear to be deterred, Schroeder said. Police then used a Taser in an attempt to subdue Holladay, but it initially appeared to have no effect, he said.

Holladay kept walking, but soon began to complain about pain to his leg, according to Schroeder. Officers were then able to quickly disarm him and take him into custody.

Holladay was taken to the hospital and later booked into jail, Schroeder said. It wasn't clear Friday what offenses he was booked on suspicion of or what type of action he was allegedly planning against the man he believed had stolen from him.

The intersection of Hill Field Road and U.S. 193 was closed during the encounter, Schroeder said.
