HOBBLE CREEK CANYON, Utah County — Police are now saying they believe a man discovered with a screwdriver sticking out of his back may have self-inflicted the wounds.

The Utah County Sheriff’s Office received a report about the incident near 3400 E. Hobble Creek Road around 1 p.m. Deputies responded and discovered a 34-year-old man who had made the call located about 1 mile up the canyon with a screwdriver sticking out of his lower back, according to Utah County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Spencer Cannon. The man was discovered laying face down on a bike path.

The man told investigators that he had been attacked from both the front and from behind by two males, Cannon said. The man said his wallet had been taken as well. The victim described one of the men as wearing a ski mask and the other as wearing a stocking cap. He said he fainted after he was attacked and then woke up with the screwdriver sticking out of him.

Cannon said the victim only received minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital in good condition. He was released a few hours later.

However, after further investigation, law enforcement officials were unable to detect anyone in the area of the alleged stabbing.

"Based on evidence at the scene, witnesses statements, victim statements and history, we strongly believe the wound was self-inflicted, and that there are no outstanding suspects," Utah County Sheriff's Office officials said in a statement.
