SALT LAKE CITY — Chicago Fire shoots on three different ‘burn stages’. When we visited, they were prepping for a scene where one of the firefighters on the show actually catches on fire.

"There's no going back at this point," said special effects coordinator, John Milinac. "We have to go forward."

The demonstration is successful and they move on. We quickly learned the cast has a lot of fun, but it’s safety that has to come first on the set. Scene likes the one we just witnessed often take days of practice before they do the real thing,

"We deal with real fire every episode and you can't let your guard down," said stunt coordinator, Rick LeFevour. "There's no fake fire and no movie fire. It's all real fire."

That means having safety experts and veteran firefighters on set every day.

"I have 36 years with the Chicago Fire Department," said Steve Chikerotis as he observed from the sidelines.

In five years, there's been no major accidents on set. It's something the crew is proud of.

"They're well-trained in the beginning and every day is like a training day whether it's climbing ladders or carrying victims," Chikertois said.

Chicago Fire’s newest addition this season is Miranda Rae Mayo who plays firefighter, Stella Kidd.

"The crew and cast made it really easy to want to come to work every day and work my butt off and be good enough to hang," Mayo said.

She says she looks forward to the next 100 episodes of the hit NBC show.

"I feel very grateful to be a part of a cast who is committed week end and week out to telling an accurate story because the real (firefighters) deserve that," she said.

You can watch Chicago Fire each Tuesday at 9 p.m. on KSL TV.
