WEST HAVEN, Weber County — An Ogden man tried to destroy a gun by soaking it in acid after using it to try to kill a man in a West Haven neighborhood last month, according to charges filed Monday.

Jes Robert Vollmer, 38, is charged in 2nd District Court with attempted aggravated murder, a first-degree felony, as well as use of a firearm by a restricted person and obstructing justice, both second-degree felonies.

The charges identify the victim as Ellis Jensen, 40. Vollmer allegedly shot Jensen in the stomach Nov. 25 at 1022 W. Wilson Lane. The man survived, despite "serious bodily injury," but remained hospitalized Monday, according to court documents. Vollmer was arrested Dec. 1, six days after the shooting.

Vollmer and Jensen know each other, according to Weber County Sheriff's Lt. Nate Hutchinson. Vollmer frequently stayed at the home where the shooting occurred, which is owned by a relative of his, Hutchinson said. Jensen had been invited to the home on the day of the shooting, but it wasn't clear for what reason, he said.

A search of Vollmer's vehicle turned up a gun in his trunk, court documents say.

"The firearm was found damaged due to being soaked in acid," the charges state. "Vollmer stated that in an attempt to destroy the firearm it was soaked in acid. Vollmer also stated the firearm was hit with a a hammer in (an) attempt to destroy it."

Investigators allege that Vollmer recovered the shell casing that had been discarded from his gun and removed it from the site of the shooting.

Vollmer's next court hearing is scheduled for Wednesday. He is currently being held in the Weber County Jail.

Vollmer's criminal history in Utah includes a sentence of zero to five years at the Utah State Prison in 2011 for aggravated assault. He has also previously been convicted of simple assault. Numerous protective orders have previously been taken out against Vollmer, according to court records.
