HEBER CITY — Police say a fire that severely damaged a Heber City home Saturday was arson.

Robert Irvin Doan III, 46, was arrested for investigation of aggravated arson after attempting to flee from the scene of the fire, according to Heber City police.

Officers responding to the fire Saturday arrived to find the home fully engulfed in flames, according to police. Crews confirmed the home's occupants weren't inside and extinguished the blaze. Two cats died in the fire.

Police believe the fire, which left the house "severely damaged," started in the basement.

Heber City police Sunday confirmed Doan did not live at the house, but would not specify if the home belonged to someone he knew or was chosen at random.

According to state court records, Doan pleaded guilty in 2003 to class B misdemeanor criminal trespass. In 2005, he pleaded guilty to joyriding, a class A misdemeanor, stemming from an incident that occurred five years earlier. A class B misdemeanor charge for battery was dismissed in 1996 after being held in abeyance for two years.
