SALT LAKE CITY — The first of three men who shot an 18-year-old man, a killing that police believed was sparked by jealousy about a girl, was sentenced to prison Friday.

Gaethan "Synn" Laguerre, 26, will spend at least 10 years and up to life in prison for his part in the death of Jose Javier "Jay Jay" Fernandez. He was sentenced Friday to consecutive sentences of five years to life after pleading guilty to manslaughter, a first-degree felony, under a group enhancement, and aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony.

Laguerre, of Sandy, and his co-defendants — William Armstrong P-Graham, 21, and James Wellah Williams, 21 — were originally charged with murder. They have all pleaded guilty to lesser charges in deals with prosecutors.

Williams told investigators P-Graham had issues with Fernandez "because Fernandez allegedly slept with P-Graham's girlfriend," according to a search warrant.

The three men went to a home at 211 N. Cornell St. (1550 West) on April 7, where Williams got three young children out of the house and Laguerre and P-Graham went into a bedroom where Fernandez was sleeping, charges state.

Laguerre told detectives that P-Graham shot at Fernandez first, according to the warrant. An autopsy determined Fernandez was shot seven times.

P-Graham has pleaded guilty to murder, a first-degree felony, and is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 2. Williams pleaded guilty to manslaughter with a firearm enhancement and burglary, second-degree felonies, and is scheduled for sentencing Nov. 4.
