OREM — The Morgan girls volleyball team had been there before.
And on Thursday night, the Trojans played like a team in its third straight state championship match.
Top-ranked Morgan led early and often to win its second straight Class 3A state volleyball championship with a 25-15, 28-26, 25-21 sweep of Desert Hills at Utah Valley University.
And Wednesday night’s triumph was just as good for the Trojans as their undefeated season a year ago.
“I love all of them,” Morgan senior Anna Cox said through tears. “They are amazing.”
The Trojans lost only one set in the state tournament, sweeping Canyon View and Union before the title match, and getting past Dixie 3-1 in the quarterfinals.
Of course, Thursday’s final wasn’t all easy. The Thunder led 26-25 in set two before the Trojans rallied for a pair of kills to take a 2-0 advantage.
“The kids were hungry, and they wanted to repeat bad enough that they went after it,” Morgan coach Liz Wiscombe said. “I’m proud of them. I thought they did well.”
Union finished third with a 25-18, 15-25, 25-20, 25-22 win over Park City, and North Sanpete took fifth with a 25-11, 25-15, 26-24 sweep of Juan Diego.
