PROVO — BYU football is on a bye week, which means players are recovering from injuries, coaches are hitting the recruiting trail — and athletic director Tom Holmoe is adding future games to the schedule.

Holmoe has added a two-game, home-and-home series with Big Ten foe Minnesota in 2020 and 2025, the school announced Wednesday.

“We’re excited to announce this series with Minnesota,” Holmoe said in a statement. “We are always looking for opportunities to schedule storied football programs like Minnesota. It will be a great experience for our coaches, players and fans to visit Big Ten country, and we look forward to hosting the Gophers at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

BYU and Minnesota have never met in football, and the first-ever meeting will occur Sept. 25, 2020, at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The Gophers will come to Provo on Sept. 20, 2025.

The Gophers announced the series with BYU on the same day as a home-and-home series with Colorado. Minnesota will play the Buffs in 2021 and 2022.

BYU has faced a member of the Big Ten six times in program history, including the most recent outing Oct. 8 in a 31-14 win over Michigan State. The Cougars are 4-2-1 all-time against the conference, with a 2-2 record since becoming an FBS independent in 2011.

BYU series history vs. Big Ten opponents

Opponent Record Most recent
Indiana 0-1 1979
Iowa 0-0-1 1991
Michigan 1-1 2015
Michigan State 1-0 2016
Nebraska 1-0 2015
Wisconsin 1-1 2013

The Gophers have been a member of the Big 10 since its inception in 1896, and boast seven national championships, 18 conference titles, 18 bowl games and 33 All-Americans in school history.

Minnesota is the second team from the Big Ten on BYU’s 2020 schedule. The Spartans are scheduled to return this year’s scheduled date to Provo on Sept. 12, 2020 in the second game of the season. BYU’s 2020 schedule includes six Power 5 conference opponents in Utah, Michigan State, Arizona State, Minnesota, Missouri and Stanford, with two of them at home.

The Cougars are also contracted to face Utah State, Boise State and Northern Illinois in 2020, with four currently open dates on the slate.
