Utah will soon be hosting healthcare leaders from around the world at the new Intermountain Transformation Center. Construction begins soon on the 120,000 square foot building that will be located near Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.

The Transformation Center will focus on training for medical leaders, quality improvement, research, and transforming healthcare locally, nationally, and around the world. Intermountain defines healthcare transformation as the continual move towards better health and high-quality care at the lowest sustainable cost.

The center began with a major gift

The Transformation Center received a great start thanks to Kem Gardner, a Utah philanthropist, with a personal donation of $20 million. Mr. Gardner, a real estate developer, has long been involved with the healthcare system and is a part of the Intermountain Foundation Board.

“I’m giving this gift because Intermountain Healthcare has an expertise of great importance to the world,” said Mr. Gardner at an event announcing the gift. “The programs housed in the Transformation Center will do so much to improve the health and care available to people in Utah and around the world. It is also my hope that this gift will inspire others to contribute.”

What is a transformation center?

The center will house several major operations that contribute to Intermountain’s long-standing goal of healthcare transformation. The Intermountain Healthcare Leadership Institute will offer multi-day leadership courses to senior-level healthcare physician leaders and administrators from the U.S. and other countries.

Intermountain Institute for Healthcare Delivery Research will move to the new center and train physicians, nursing, and administrative executives (drawn from around the world) in clinical management methods. The Institute has helped host numerous government officials from around the globe, including recent visits of large delegations from France and Sweden, that have come to Utah to attend the courses. These officials then bring their newly-acquired knowledge back to the government systems in place in their home countries.

Clinical and innovation programs are also being developed. With more than 1,500 active research studies in more than 20 clinical areas, Intermountain is equipped to make medical discoveries that improve care and save lives.

Former CEO will lead the new center

Charles Sorenson recently retired from his President and CEO role with Intermountain. He will still be active in the system, however, having founded the new center.

The center’s groundbreaking occurs in January 2017, and the opening is projected for 2018.
