OREM — A fight behind Orem High School last week resulted in a shot being fired, leading to an arrest of the alleged shooter and two others Monday, police said.

A fight on Oct. 20 involved several people and was "basically a gang fight," said Orem Police Lt. Craig Martinez. Two rival gangs showed up to fight with each other, Martinez said, and one side brought baseball bats and a gun with them.

At one point, somebody "decided to take a shot at someone from the other group," though nobody was hit, Orem police said in a statement posted to Facebook.

Concerned family members of some of the gang members contacted police, and an investigation into the encounter led to the arrest of 20-year-old Vicente Marco Castillo.

Martinez said Castillo is the man who fired the shot. He was arrested Monday and booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault and felony discharge of a firearm.

Two others were also arrested in connection with the fight, and others were issued citations, according to the lieutenant. The investigation was handled with the help of the Utah County Major Crimes Task Force.

Police also recovered the 9 mm handgun Castillo allegedly used, Martinez added. They discovered it was stolen in Millard County, he said.

Martinez said nobody suffered significant injuries in the fight, and the high school and nearby homes were not struck by the shot.

The motive behind the violent encounter boiled down to hostility between the gangs, the lieutenant said. Those involved were teenagers and young adults, but Martinez didn't know Tuesday whether any of them attend Orem High School.
