WEST VALLEY CITY— A 1-year-old boy was killed after being hit by a vehicle in West Valley City on Tuesday.

The incident occurred near 2700 South and 2900 West early Tuesday evening. According to West Valley City police, the mother of the child drove home with the child and went to open the door to take groceries inside when the child unbuckled his seatbelt and got out of the vehicle.

A driver was backing out of a nearby driveway, did not see the child in the roadway, and hit the child.

The toddler was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Police later confirmed that the toddler, identified as Grayson Gavin, had passed away.

Police said the driver is cooperating with the investigation. An accident investigation team was dispatched to the scene to reconstruct the incident, police said.
