SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake police will try to enhance surveillance video from a car wash that was recording the night a man washing his new vehicle was shot and killed, apparently at random, during an apparent carjacking.

Cristhian Marquez, 33, of Salt Lake City, was shot in the torso and died Saturday while washing his car at 1075 S. Redwood Road. As of Tuesday, police had not made any arrests.

Marquez was washing his recently purchased 2015 Toyota Avalon when he was approached by another man about 10:15 p.m. Saturday.

Salt Lake police detective Robert Ungricht said Tuesday he did not know whether surveillance video from the car wash captured the entire confrontation or just the man believed to be the gunman walking to the car wash stall.

The surveillance video has not been made public.

Marquez was shot once, stumbled out to the street and collapsed. Ungricht did not know Tuesday if there were others at the car wash at the time.

The gunman drove off in Marquez's car. The vehicle was found on fire at 1532 W. High Ave. (250 West) about five hours later. Detectives have not revealed whether any additional evidence was recovered from the burned vehicle.

Police say Marquez appeared to have been chosen by the gunman at random.

Marquez is survived by his wife, Gabriela Elizabeth Gutierrez, and an 8-year-old son. A GoFundMe page* was started by his wife.

"Cristhian was a loving husband and my best friend. Even though our time together was cut short, he will always stay in my heart and in the heart of his loving brothers, sister and parents. We were planning to renew our vows next year in front of God and all of our friends and family, and start a family of our own. His life was taken unexpectedly on 10/22/16. Cristhian, I love you and you will always be my one true love," Gutierrez wrote.

On Facebook, many of Marquez's relatives honored him by changing their Facebook profile pictures and banners to a picture of him with the words, "Always with us, never forgotten, RIP Uncle Cristhian, we'll see you soon."

Anyone with information about the shooting can call police at 801-799-3000.
