SPANISH FORK — Eleven students from Mountainland Applied Technology College were taken to a local hospital as precaution Monday after they reported feeling sick, possibly from a chemical exposure.

The incident at the Spanish Fork school, 1200 Del Monte Road, happened about noon. Spanish Fork Police Lt. Matt Johnson said students in a lab were cleaning their areas at the end of class when many began feeling light headed, dizzy and nauseous.

"At this point they're believing it's possibly some chemicals mixed with ammonia used to clean the dental lab and cosmetology lab," Johnson said.

Questar Gas was called and confirmed there was no carbon monoxide leak, he said. The entire school was evacuated.

Some students also reported feeling sick while cleaning their areas last week, Johnson said. It was not immediately known Monday if the school was using new chemicals or why there was a sudden increase in students feeling sick.

Johnson said students were taken to the hospital mainly as a precaution and everyone was expected to make a speedy, full recovery.
