The spookiest time of the year is upon us. Dressing as scary creatures or funny characters and scoring free treats from neighbors makes Halloween a holiday with plenty of fans. It’s also a great time to celebrate with family.

Here are seven family friendly Halloween ideas.

Olympics

From gymnast Simone Biles to swimmer Yusra Mardini, the Rio Olympics were full of awe-inspiring athletic feats and inspirational stories. With the worldwide competition fresh in your mind, choose your favorite Olympians to inspire your family’s Halloween costumes this year. Dress as Team USA or pick athletes from different countries. Take it a step further by throwing an Olympics-inspired Halloween party, complete with a costume contest and backyard games.

Political players

Dressing as beloved — or not so loved — politicians is always a hit, and with the presidential election a week after Halloween, you’ll be on point. There are sure to be plenty of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump options, so throw on a pantsuit or (a lot of) self-tanner, and don a mask. Include family members as campaign staff or friends and family of the nominees. Alternately, look to the past with a classic Richard Nixon mask and peace signs.

Snapchat filters

If you love Snapchat, you’ll be delighted to discover you can look like your favorite filter for Halloween. Get the family in on the fun, by dressing as filters such as puppy faces and flower crowns. Remember to (temporarily) record the moment by sharing a snap of your costumes — no filter needed.

Pokémon Go

When Pokémon Go exploded in popularity this summer, it opened a world of costume possibilities. Parents can dress as trainers to capture their children dressed as Pokémon, or vice versa. Invite friends over for a Pokémon-themed party. Have fun with it by venturing out in costume to visit PokeStops and enjoy the cool autumn weather.

Ghostbusters

With a new movie this year, Ghostbusters costumes are at the top of the list. The 1980s movies, cartoons and the most recent film incarnation offer plenty of choices as you emulate popular characters. Dress your family as Ghostbusters and the poltergeists they chase. Then go out and capture ghosts — or at least some candy.

Inspirational women

If you want to go beyond sexy costumes, consider dressing as Frida Kahlo, Beyoncé, Hermione Granger or any other number of inspirational women, real and fictional. Buy a complete outfit, or come up with your own idea and pull together the pieces you need, including wigs, glasses, shoes or other accessories. Turn it into a family theme of awesome women or focus on one by having Hermione accompanied by your family of Hogwarts students.

Star Wars

The countless characters in this franchise make for easy couple or group costumes. Let your family members choose the light or dark side, and then dress as Rey and BB-8, Luke Skywalker with C-3PO and R2-D2, Finn on either side, Kylo Ren or Darth Vader, or any of the other many members of the Star Wars universe.
