ROOSEVELT — An employee at Uintah Basin Medical Center forced a temporary lockdown Monday when officials thought he was smuggling two rifles into the hospital.

The scare began about 10 a.m. when Life Flight personnel in Salt Lake City watching the security monitors set up at the hospital's helipad saw someone with what appeared to be two rifles go through the door near the helipad, said Roosevelt Police Chief Rick Harrison.

"The person appeared to be trying to conceal the weapons in a laundry cart," he said.

The hospital was placed on lockdown while police and hospital staff viewed photos taken from the monitors. They quickly recognized the man as an employee.

"That person confirmed the rifles were brought to UBMC to show them to another employee," Harrison said. "UBMC will review their protocols to see what, if any, adjustments to UBMC and police response may be incorporated to improve response to similar situations."
