TV LAND — Fall TV is upon us — and with that comes the frantic scheduling of when to watch which shows. What is appointment TV? What is stream-the-next-day TV? Which shows will be spoiled for you if you go into work the next morning not having seen the latest episode?

In today’s television and streaming climate, there are hundreds of offerings. Shows on shows on shows with different themes, messages, casts and genres. How do you decide what gets to be on your schedule, and which should be scheduled by you?

Binge later

Comedies

Comedies are usually OK to miss week-to-week, since they’re based on jokes instead of big plot reveals. They are even sometimes funnier in large doses, when you can more easily remember the callbacks from episodes ago and marvel at the brilliance of the writers.

Medical or crime shows

Any medical or crime procedurals. Save those for a rainy weekend, then settle in for a couple of 12-hour days watching crimes be neatly solved in the course of 43 minutes.

Old shows

Things that are already off the air. “Freaks and Geeks,” “Pushing Daisies,” “Twin Peaks” and other cult classics didn’t last long, but they’re still very worth the task of sitting in front of your chosen device and delving into it for hours on end.

Watch live

Pilots

You don’t want to be the one who misses all the first episodes of new shows, and find out all the twist endings that are meant to hook you for the rest of the season while you are at the water cooler at work the next day.

Events, mini-series and limited run things

From live musical TV events to presidential debates, there are plenty of non-sports appointment TV offerings. But there are also, more and more, short series like BBC’s “Sherlock” that is only a blink-and-you-miss-it three episodes per season.

Dramas

High-profile (award-winning) dramas should be watched as they air to avoid spoilers. Things like “The Walking Dead” will dominate the news cycle, and your Twitter feed might inadvertently reveal something to you.

What shows do you like to binge watch and what do you schedule your day around to watch live? Let us know in the comments.
