TAYLORSVILLE — A cellphone tower caught fire Thursday, causing part of Bangerter Highway to close in both directions, officials said.
As of about 4:30 p.m., the entire road was closed between 4100 South and 4700 South and was not expected to open for a few hours, according to the West Valley City Police Department. The road was reopened just after 8 p.m.
The tower will be removed due to fire damage. The fire apparently started as a welding crew was making repairs to the tower, officials said.
The tower was leaning, so one building nearby was evacuated, according to Captain Denver Rigby with the West Valley City Fire Department. The building has a childcare center and some other offices. Crews used a crane to stabilize the tower by Thursday night.
