SALT LAKE CITY — A 36-year-old woman died after falling about 100 feet while hiking Mt. Olympus Sunday afternoon, police said.
Emergency crews received a report of the fall at about 12:23 p.m., according to Unified police Lt. Lex Bell.
Bell said two people, a man and a woman, were either hiking or climbing on Mt. Olympus when the woman fell. The man called for help and said the woman had fallen about 100 feet and died.
A search and rescue team reached the woman, later identified by Unified police as Celeste Yang of Salt Lake City, and confirmed that she had died.
Bell said Yang was an experienced hiker who was known to some of the search and rescue workers. He described her as someone who knew what she was doing and had proper equipment.
"She was in good shape. She knew the mountains relatively well," he said.
Sunday's was the 42nd search and rescue operation that Unified police have conducted this year, and the seventh fatality, according to Bell.
