TOOELE — City officials are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for an arson fire in July that destroyed 10 mobile homes and severely damaged at least eight more.

On July 19, a field fire fueled by strong winds pushed 80- to 100-foot flames into an adjacent neighborhood, taking out homes in a two-block area. The fire was determined to be arson.

A few days after the incident, police asked the public to help them find a 24-year-old man who neighbors said had been seen in the area and might have information about the fire. He was found and arrested on outstanding misdemeanor warrants but released a day later.

As of Thursday, the man had not been arrested or charged for anything related to the fire.

Tooele is now offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to a conviction.

"We hope that this is incentive for someone who may have been holding onto information to come forward and share what they know," Tooele Police Chief Ron Kirby said.

Police "initially received numerous tips from the public and investigated each of those tips but have not identified the suspect responsible for the fire. As time has passed, the information provided has decreased, and detectives have few new leads," according to a prepared statement from police.

Anyone with information can call Tooele police at 435-882-5600 or text TOOELETIP7101 plus a message to 274637 (CRIMES).
