SALT LAKE CITY — The innocence of childhood sometimes means getting lost in a make-believe world.
A place where creating a fuzzy friend is all in a day's work.
“I've just been smiling and happy I don't know why I'm just happy and smiling. I don't know what's causing it,” Breckin said.
This miniature Star Wars fan has a smile and enthusiasm that is absolutely contagious.
“There's been some hard times,” he said.
Especially when your "forever" is so uncertain.
Breckin was adopted as an infant. Then at 8-years-old he entered the Utah Foster Care system.
“It was hard for me and it still is kind of hard to have to accept that,” he said.
It takes a tough resolve to survive in foster care, and sometimes the strength to keep going comes from within.
“Accepting things that I think may not be best but are best,” he said.
Where there is acceptance there's also hope. Hope for adoption.
“Because I can't just stay in foster care forever,” he said.
He's worried his time is running out.
“It makes me sad because it's hard to think about it.”
Each day he get's older and each day his chance of having a childhood surrounded by family is shrinking.
“Someday I will probably, I hope I will get a family.”
Something so abundantly clear about Breckin is his selflessness. A word that usually doesn't describe pre-teens.
No matter all his hardships, all he's been through, Breckin still thinks of others.
“I hope that each kid that needs a home finds one that is right for them, and it isn't as hard as it was for me,” he said.
Breckin's life is hard, which means getting lost in a world of make believe is a welcome distraction. And while building a bear may be easy, he has his sights set on building a future.
“I'm going to try my best to find the right family. Find the right fit.”
