SALT LAKE CITY — Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham announced Tuesday a partial reinstatement for senior wide receiver Cory Butler-Byrd.

Whittingham said Butler-Byrd is now allowed to participate in practices and team activities but is not allowed to compete in games for the time being. However, Whittingham added that there is no timetable for his return.

Butler-Byrd was suspended indefinitely on the first day of fall camp stemming from an incident on campus in July where he damaged a campus police vehicle and a window to the police station. Butler-Byrd appeared in court Monday, entering a guilty plea in abeyance relating to criminal mischief misdemeanor charges.

The senior receiver agreed to pay $1,691.50 in restitution fees and will seek counseling as a result of the plea agreement.

Although Butler-Byrd is still suspended from playing in games, it’s likely Whittingham will lift that partial suspension soon based on a similar incident involving Dominique Hatfield last season. Hatfield was suspended prior to the season but was later reinstated in Pac-12 after his legal issues had been sorted out.
