PROVO — College basketball fans in Utah were given a massive present when the state’s top-four program announced the organization of the Beehive Classic at Vivint Arena a week ago.

Under the doubleheader sponsored by Zion’s Bank, matchups involving BYU, Utah, Utah State and Weber State were ensured for the next three years — and potentially longer.

BYU added to those series Friday.

BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe announced three future series with the in-state rivals, giving the Cougars a long-term series with its three Wasatch Front rivals for as many as five years.

The Cougars will face the Utes for three-straight years beginning in 2017, including the 2018 contest at Vivint Arena. The series was in jeopardy when Utah athletic director Chris Hill and coach Larry Krystkowiak announced a hiatus to the rivalry following last season’s contest. But after taking the 2016-17 season off, the series is back on.

In addition, the Cougars continue their series against the Aggies through 2021 with two games in provo, two in Logan and two in Salt Lake City. The 2016 and 2019 contests will be played as part of the Beehive Classic, while 2018 and 2021 will be played in the Marriott Center and 2017 and 2020 in the Dee Glenn Smith Spectrum.

“We are excited to continue our long standing rivalry with BYU,” Utah State coach Tim Duryea said in a statement. “Coach Rose and his staff have always understood the significance of the game between our institutions.

“We are pleased to continue this series on a home-and-home basis. Annually, it is a highlight for our players, coaches, fans and students, and a game that both institutions look forward to.”

The Aggies’ series with the Cougars is the longest rivalry in USU men’s basketball history with 232 meetings since the 1905-06 season.

Weber State also continues its longstanding series with the Cougars via a 2016 game in Provo, a 2018 contest in Ogden’s Dee Events Center, and the 2017 game as part of the Beehive Classic.

The Cougars are 129-128 all-time against Utah in a series that dates back to 1909 and was among the longest continuous rivalries in the nation.

BYU and Utah State have played since 1906, with the Cougars owning a 140-92 record. BYU is 31-10 all-time against Weber State.
