SALT LAKE CITY — Popular local hot dog chain J Dawgs took its first step in its plans to expand beyond Utah County.

Doors opened for its location on 341 S. Main St. in downtown Salt Lake Friday, and J Dawgs General Manager Justin Stubbs said about 400 to 500 people came in for the first lunch rush.

For comparison, he said its busiest location, Orem, averages around 300 people at that same timespan.

He said the hope, of course, is to retain that promising amount in the future.

Though the new Salt Lake location is the first outside of Utah County, it’s the fifth overall location since its inception. Aside from the original Provo location and now the new Salt Lake location, the company has locations in American Fork, Lehi and Orem.

Stubbs said more Salt Lake locations may be on the horizon, with one planned in the Fort Union area to open by the end of this year or early 2017 before possibly spreading outward to more Utah locations or even other states.

The business was founded in 2004 by Jayson Edwards, who was a BYU student at the time. Its first location opening in what was once an old shack in Provo.
