SALT LAKE CITY — Drivers on Salt Lake County’s belt route will have some major inconveniences to contend with for the next several weeks.
The Utah Department of Transportation has scheduled closures on two high-traffic interchanges along the I-215 freeway.
Beginning at 1 a.m. Friday, the ramp from northbound I-215 to westbound state Route 201 will be closed until late August while crews rebuild the ramp with new pavement.
"Drivers should plan ahead and use I-15 or Bangerter Highway as alternate routes to access westbound state Route 201,” said UDOT spokesman John Gleason. “This is going to be impactful. It’s a ramp that quite a few people use.”
Motorists should also be aware of nightly lane closures on 4700 South for the next two weeks as workers perform median and signal work, he said.
Additionally, 3500 South is scheduled to close in both directions starting at 9 p.m. Friday and re-open by 6 a.m. Saturday. The closure will allow crews to place beams on a new overpass as UDOT widens the I-215 bridge at 3500 South, he said.
The road will close again on the nights of Aug. 5 and Aug. 6 for the same work. There will also be some ramp work at the end of August.
Gleason said crews are making significant progress, thus far. Drivers will notice a smooth new asphalt surface that crews recently finished on westbound I-215 from 300 East to Redwood Road, he said.
“We still have a few minor things to finish, but drivers will feel like we’re all done in that section,” he added. “We’ve also completed some concrete paving in the median from 4700 South to 3500 South.”
Gleason noted that crews have finished reconstructing the ramp from southbound I-215 to eastbound state Route 201. Scheduled for completion in fall of 2017, the I-215 rebuild is the largest freeway construction project of the year.
