Riding a bike is a great form of exercise and way to get around. However, in even the most bike-conscious communities, there are dangers that come with riding a bicycle. If you ride on the road, you must share the road with cars. If you’re on parkways or dirt trails, there are pedestrians and other bikers you must worry about. And of course, riding at night poses the whole other risk of not being seen by fast-moving traffic.

To make your time pedaling from Point A to Point B as safe as possible, we have brought you six sweet products that will make biking safer.

1. Helmet

“Even with all of the sweet products out there to help protect cyclists, the most important safety equipment is a helmet,” says Engberson. “It doesn't matter if you ride a road bike, mountain bike, BMX, skateboard, scooter, whatever. If it involves wheels, wear a helmet.”

Robert J. DeBry and Associates echoes Engberson's words by way of its “Save a Life Helmet Safety Campaign” that provides useful safety tips for parents and children as well as the opportunity to purchase high-quality children’s helmets. All helmets are certified by the Consumer Product Safety Commission and are provided at a reduced cost of $5 and $10.

2. Revolights

When you’re out riding alongside motorists at night, reflectors are good to have, but having lights is even better. Revolights are designed to strap onto your wheels and project the lights forward and back, creating the look of a tail light and headlight while providing 360 degrees of visibility.

What’s even cooler, is that Revolights has come up with its Eclipse model that not only has a functional headlight that allows you to see where you’re going, but it has a smart tail light that can sense your speed and flash when you’re slowing down as well as handlebar activated turn signals to let cars see where you’re headed.

3. Volvo Life Paint

Having cars see your bike is one thing, but letting them see you adds life to your bike. Volvo Life Paint is a reflective adhesive that you can spray on your clothing as well as your helmet and bike so that you can be completely illuminated from head to toe for cars to see.

4. 3rd Eye Eyeglass Mirror

Just as important as cars being able to see you, is you being able to see them, and a mirror is a good way to see motorist coming up from behind, says owner of Utah Mountain Biking, Michael Engberson.

The 3rd Eye Eyeglass Mirror has small rearview mirrors that can mount to your bike, helmet or even your glasses to provide you with that third eye to be more aware of all things around you, whether it’s a car, another biker or a giant moose or mountain lion wanting to join in your mountain biking adventure.

5. Delta AirZound

Sometimes driving gets monotonous, and our vision gets a little desensitized or overstimulated by so many things to focus on. This is why cars have horns, and why bikes should too — and not the plastic ones that come with your child’s Walmart Huffy.

The Delta AirZound is a horn that easily attaches to your bike’s handlebars, providing 115 decibels of sound that will wake up any motorist.

What’s better? This life-saving tool requires no batteries or cartridges and can easily refill with any bike pump.

6. Road ID App

When heading out on a bike ride, you are immediately vulnerable to hazards, especially if you ride solo. If you get lost or hurt, it is imperative that your family and friends are able to locate you, or if necessary, for first responders to have information that can help them help you.

Road ID has not only created an easy way to identify you should you be harmed, but has also made it so that loved ones can easily find your location by way of the Road ID app.

This app uses your phone’s GPS system and has a powerful safety feature known as eCrumbs (electronic breadcrumbs) that allows others to track your workout on a map in real-time. Additionally, there is an optional “stationary alert” that notifies your emergency contacts if you stop moving for more than five minutes, even if they’re not watching you on the map.

What’s even better is that the app can also configure your lock screen to display your name, emergency contacts and other vital information such as medical conditions in case you’re hurt and unable to speak.
