SALT LAKE CITY — It’s been a long summer season for the Utah Jazz and some of our local college basketball players in Salt Lake City.

And it’s been just as long for Deseret News writer Jody Genessy, who just returned from following the Jazz at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, where Utah went 3-5.

Genessy joined KSL SportsBeat on Sunday night to recap the summer, including the breakout performance of Trey Lyles. The NBA sophomore averaged 24 points and seven rebounds on 39 percent shooting to lead the Jazz through two summer league appearances in Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.

Lyles wasn’t the only Jazz player to break out in July, though. Former Weber State post Joel Bolomboy got better as the summer went on, and finished averaging 7.6 points and six rebounds for Utah. Former Utah State wing Spencer Butterfield was among the low-profile players who impressed, converting 12-of-24 3-pointers and averaging nine points per game.

Genessy also discusses the shooting of Jazz big man Tibor Pleiss, former Utah teammates Jakob Poeltl and Delon Wright seeing their first time together with Toronto, and ex-BYU star Jimmer Fredette’s latest chance with Denver.
