Every person encounters problems, whether it results from health issues, a rocky relationship or just life in general. But more than what causes the trials, how a person reacts is what determines his or her outcome.

When you examine patterns of mentally tough people, it helps you identify and implement ways to remain in control of your life. To give you an idea of where to start, KSL and Robert J. DeBry and Associates have brought you seven habits of mentally tough people:

1. Nurturing self-confidence

Our minds and thoughts have a vital impact on whether we accomplish something or meet with success.

When you have the ability to maintain confidence in the face of failure or adversity, it gives your emotional abilities a sort of shield against potential pitfalls. In addition, the thoughts you think about yourself can make or break what you are trying to accomplish, and even shape your reality.

If you believe in yourself, you’ll have the upper hand against others who are negative, doubtful and afraid.

2. Brushing off negativity

Although similar to self-confidence and positive self-talk, the ability to deal with negative situations and people goes beyond just you. If you have a toxic relationship or a Negative Nancy co-worker, your life will be a lot easier if you know how to deal with them accordingly.

When dealing with volatile or argumentative people, don’t let your emotions fuel their fire. Stay calm and collected, maintaining a rational and understanding viewpoint.

3. Practicing self-care

Until you focus on your wellness, you can’t devote full effort to anything else. Staying healthy is an ongoing process, but that doesn’t mean it should be neglected.

Mentally strong people eat a balanced diet and get enough sleep. The truth is, if you’re hungry and tired, you won’t be in any position to deal with things calmly and rationally.

Exercise is another critical aspect of self-care, or practices like daily yoga and meditation.

4. Saying 'no'

If you never tell people "no," you’ll end up being quite the unhappy "yes" man. Research shows that people who find it difficult to say “no” are more likely to experience stress, burnout and even depression.

Exercise courage, confidence and consideration when saying "no." You’ll find it makes your life simpler, and it allows you to give your all to commitments you’re already engaged in. Mentally tough people also know when to tell themselves "no" — or in other words, exercising self-control.

5. Increasing emotional intelligence

Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and use your emotions to your advantage. In addition, mentally tough people are able to interpret the emotional climate around them, which definitely comes in handy.

Although this skill doesn’t come easy, it can increase over time with careful observation.

6. Embracing change

This helps most when you’re facing what some might call a failure. But if you can remain flexible and open, you’ll be able to see the silver lining in life’s trials. As long as you don’t hang your hat on one thing, you’ll be able to embrace change as it comes, and move on to resulting new opportunities, if you look for them.

7. Taking (calculated) risks

Fear is a powerful emotion, and it rules the decisions of all too many people. Those with mental toughness, though, are able to assess the advantages and disadvantages, and proceed with confidence. Don’t let fear limit you and what you make of yourself. Rather, focus on opening your mind to what’s possible and taking the steps — no matter how scary — to get there.

When you work toward making these habits part of you and how you view the world, you can deal well with catastrophes and the mundane. In addition, you’ll be able to make positives things happen, from getting that promotion to working through a tough time at home.
