LOS ANGELES — Richard Chaney was one of just five players on Team Utah who didn’t play college basketball in the Beehive State during The Basketball Tournament opener Saturday at Cal State Los Angeles.

But the former Troy guard made the biggest shot of the game.

Chaney drained a 3-pointer with 28 seconds left in overtime to lift Team Utah to a 78-77 win over the Utah State Stallions. The former Trojan finished with 12 points, while Terrence Drisdom paced Team Utah with 18 points, nine rebounds and four steals.

Utah Valley alum Marcel Davis, who had a game-high 27 points for the Stallions, missed a desperation heave at the buzzer to help Team Utah advance to face second-seeded LAUNFD, which topped West Coast Ronin 81-63. Davis finished 5 of 10 from 3-point range in the loss.

Justin Hawkins supplied 16 points and eight boards for Utah.

Nate Bendall had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Stallions, who were playing in their first tournament with eyes on the $2 million grand prize. Preston Medline added 13 points and seven assists, and Danny Berger had 10 points and five rebounds.

Davis scored his 13th point of the game on a triple to give the Stallions a 35-33 lead over the former Utes with about three minutes left in the first half. Davis, an American Fork grad who originally signed with Utah State, finished with a game-high 16 points to give the 10th-seeded Aggie alums a 41-36 lead at halftime.

Utah’s Shaun Green took over down the stretch, dropping in a layup for two of his nine points with less than five minutes remaining to give the former Utes a 64-62 lead. The Ute alums built up a 68-63 lead with two minutes left, but Berger knocked down a 3-pointer from the left corner to tie the game at 68-68 with under a minute remaining.

After trading buckets, Davis had a chance to win with one second left on a stick-back bucket, but his shot was off the mark to send the game to overtime tied at 70-70.

Team Utah opened the extra period on a 5-0 run, but the Stallions responded by tying the game on 2 of 3 free throws by Bendall, 75-75 with 2:03 on the clock.

Bendall knocked down a pair of free throws to give Utah State’s alums a 77-75 lead in the final minute, but Chaney hit his second 3-pointer of the game to go up one, 78-77, in the final 30 seconds.

The game was streamed live on Facebook. Watch the replay of the second half and overtime in the embedded video below.

New Mexico RH 95, BC Portland 67 — Former Weber State guard Scott Bamforth had 22 points to lead New Mexico to a victory over Portland.

Bamforth, who had four 3-pointers, also grabbed seven rebounds in the win, which saw former Wildcats teammate Kyle Tresnak play 10 minutes before suffering a blow to the head early.

New Mexico advanced to face West Regional top-seed Team 23 on Sunday after the former’s 121-81 rout of Kimchi Express.
