CFL player catches touchdown, knocks over opposing coach in celebration

Friday marks Canada Day for our friendly neighbors to the north, thus From Left Field celebrates with a weird mix-up during a CFL matchup between the Ottawa Redblacks and Montreal Alouettes Thursday night.

It all started when Montreal’s Duron Carter caught a touchdown pass in the third quarter while getting crushed by Ottawa defensive back Jermaine Robinson trying to jar the ball loose in the end zone.

Carter, who is the son of NFL Hall of Fame receiver Cris Carter, got up and immediately ran to the Ottawa bench, where he knocked over Redblacks head coach Rick Campbell before getting into a mini scuffle with some Ottawa players on their sideline.

Carter ended by signaling to the Montreal crowd to cheer louder while Ottawa players continued to push him away from their sideline. Referees ejected Carter for knocking over the coach.

Ottawa got the last laugh, though. The Redblacks went on to win 28-13. However, the real winner was everyone because at least football is back somewhere.

The NBA free agency quiz

Not only is Friday Canada Day, but the NBA free agent market opened at midnight — and ESPN wants to know where you would head in free agency.

Kevin Arnovitz of ESPN.com created the quiz for fans to take, with questions regarding many factors such as money, playing time, winning and even city type.

The lone downside is it doesn’t come with the money like NBA free agents will reel in this summer. As NBC Sports pointed out last year, the old maximum allowed to any free agent was $26 million per year for a player with 10 or more years of service.

However, the salary cap jumped from $70 million in 2015 to $94 million in 2016, and the ultimate deal maxes out at $30.8 million a year, according to Yahoo Sports’ Shams Charania. Other tier players with less service time will now max anywhere from $22 million to $26 million.

A Chanticleer celebration

Coastal Carolina claimed its first ever NCAA title Thursday, knocking off Arizona 4-3 in a wild decisive Game 3 of the College World Series Final.

The title came in the school’s first ever appearance in the College World Series.

To give an idea of how small the program is, only 11 former Chanticleers have gone on to play in the majors since 1974, and only one is currently on an MLB roster. So as the team mobbed the mound in Omaha, its lone current MLB player, Tampa Bay’s Taylor Motter, celebrated while watching the game on Tropicana Field’s jumbotron.

As the final out was made, Motter threw his glove up in celebration and took off his Rays overshirt to show he was wearing a Coastal Carolina shirt underneath it.

He also gave a shout-out to his alma mater before the Rays played Detroit Thursday night.

The Chanticleers will continue to celebrate Friday as their move to the Sun Belt Conference becomes official. The switch will also lead to bumping the school’s football program from the FCS to the FBS level in 2017.
