ST. GEORGE — Authorities are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the poisoning deaths of two dozen migratory birds earlier this year, it was announced Thursday.

The birds and three goldfish were discovered dead March 2 on or near a pond at the St. George Golf Club, 2190 S. 1400 East, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said.

According to the agency, grain that was found scattered in the area, near holes 9 and 18, tested positive for strychnine, a toxic plant-based pesticide. The birds were examined and the cause of their deaths was identified as strychnine poisoning.

"These deaths violated state and federal wildlife and environmental protection statutes," the Fish and Wildlife Service said in a statement.

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is also investigating the deaths. Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact that agency at 435-865-6100 or the Fish and Wildlife Service at 435-673-3420.
