Editor's note: The original story mistakenly identified Ehlers as being from Idaho. He was from Alta.LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON — Bones found last year at a steep, rocky spot near Alta Ski Resort have been positively identified as that of a missing Utah man who was last seen in 2012, police said.

According to officials at Unified police, the bones were identified as 48-year-old Corry Ehlers, who went missing on May 21, 2012 after telling his girlfriend he was going to hike in the Hellgate area of the canyon.

A Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter was used in the search for Ehlers in addition to ATVs and dogs.

In July 2015, hikers found a boot with a bone it. After alerting police, investigators began finding more human remains in the area.

The boot was found about 5 miles up the canyon, but police did not find a skull or anything to identify the victim in 2015. It is believed that Ehlers accidentally fell off a cliff. Unified police said Wednesday that all evidence from the area has been collected and no additional searches are planned.

More information will be posted when it becomes available.
