TAYLORSVILLE — A Sandy man is in critical condition after a crash between a motorcycle and a car Thursday afternoon, police said.
Emergency crews responded to a report of the crash at 1300 W. 5400 South shortly after 3 p.m., according to Unified police detective Ken Hansen.
Hansen said the motorcyclist was headed westbound on 5400 South when it collided with a sedan that was making a left turn onto 1300 West.
Hansen said the driver of the motorcycle, who he said was about 30 years old, was taken to a hospital in critical condition, while the female driver of the sedan was in fair condition. Hansen said the man was not wearing a helmet
The woman, who Hansen said was in her 80s, may have suffered a broken ankle but was in good condition, Hansen added.
"The motorcycle, because of speed, penetrated into the vehicle quite a bit," Hansen said. "It appears that he didn't have the opportunity to try to stop."
Officials closed westbound traffic on 1300 West at 5400 South while police investigated the crash, but the section of the road reopened at about 6 p.m.
Hansen said the cause of the crash is still under investigation. Hansen left open the possibility that both drivers could be found at fault, but said it could take two to three weeks to make any definitive findings.
