SAN FRANCISCO — BYU men's soccer captain Ethan Meyer has been a key figure in the Cougars’ season in the Premier Development League.

His goal Thursday night on the road was just as critical.

Meyer scored a spectacular strike just under 18 minutes into the match to lift the Cougars past host San Francisco City FC, 1-0 and give BYU (3-4-3) its first win in nearly a month.

Pedro Vasconcelos poked a one-touch pass to Meyer in the center of the field, and the veteran from Dallas, Texas curled a shot from distance into the upper left corner of the net for the game’s only goal.

The victory was the Cougars’ first win since May 21, a 2-1 win over Burlingame Dragons FC. BYU went winless in the next five matches, including losses to San Francisco and division-leading Fresno.

BYU continues its PDL road trip Saturday at Burlingame. The Cougars return to South Field for senior night July 13 against FC Golden State Force.
