CEDAR CITY — A jury convicted a Kanarraville man Wednesday of lesser charges of aggravated assault on an Iron County sheriff's deputy.
Grant Louis Biedermann, 43, was charged with two counts of attempted aggravated murder, a first-degree felony carrying a potential sentence of life in prison. But a jury instead found him guilty of two counts of aggravated assault, a third-degree felony that carries a maximum sentence of zero to five years in prison.
Biedermann was arrested Dec. 13, 2013, after he shot an Iron County sheriff's deputy at the Red Ledge Campground, 15 N. Main, in Cedar City, as officers responded to calls that he was suicidal.
Biedermann initially came out of his trailer but went back inside when he saw the officers, police said at the time. A SWAT team was called when officers saw Biedermann had a gun. Before the team arrived, Biedermann came back out, fired at the officers and a gunfight ensued.
A bullet grazed Biedermann's head, and deputy Kellen Hudson, 27, was shot through the hip.
One day after being booked into the Iron County Jail, Biedermann was rushed to a northern Utah hospital for emergency medical care for bleeding in his brain. He was treated and later returned to jail.
The jury also found Biedermann guilty Wednesday of carrying a dangerous weapon while under the influence of alcohol, a class B misdemeanor. Sentencing is set for July 29.
