SANDY — At the annual Liberty Mutual Invitational golf tournament supporting the National Kidney Foundation, BYU coach Kalani Sitake and Utah coach Kyle Whittingham shared laughs — but Whittingham had the last one as his Ute-based squad won the duel.

Whittingham's group, which included assistant coaches Morgan Scalley and Fred Whittingham, shot 60 to beat out Sitake's 65 in a group that included assistants Ty Detmer and Ilaisa Tuiaki.

Both sides raised $60,000 for the National Kidney Foundation of Utah and Idaho, and as is customary at the annual charity event at Hidden Valley Country Club, the losing squad had to sing the fight song of the winning squad's school. That meant former Utah defensive coordinator Sitake returned to his red-wearing days to belt out the Utah fight song with a group that didn't more or less didn't know the lyrics.

A deal is a deal, right? After all, Utah coaches had to do it last year.

Jokes aside, Whittingham also expressed his support for Sitake, a close friend.

"I'm excited for this opportunity. He deserves this opportunity; he's the right man for the job," the Utah coach and BYU alum said.

It seemed to hearken back to the good old days, when coaches LaVell Edwards and Ron McBride were best friends, except at the moment their schools faced each other.

Maybe history will repeat itself as two good friends in Kalani Sitake and Kyle Whittingham are at the helm of rival institutions.

"I'll always support Utah," Sitake said. "I hope they go 11-1 this year."

But Whittingham quickly retorted: "Those darn USC Trojans."
