SANDY — Real Salt Lake returns from its lengthy road trip to Rio Tinto Stadium with next week’s U.S. Open Cup match June 14 against third-division Wilmington.

The club will also christen the renovated stadium pitch with its first-ever friendly against an Italian power.

Series A’s Inter Milan will visit RSL and Rio Tinto Stadium on July 19 at 8 p.m. MT, the first Italian club to visit the Wasatch Front, the Salt Lake club announced Wednesday.

“The arrival of such a storied club as Inter Milan coming here to face Real Salt Lake is a testament to the vision our owner, Dell Loy Hansen, who is developing the sport in our community,” RSL chief business officer Andy Carroll said in a statement. “As the Herriman Complex evolves, we expect the Salt Lake Valley to serve as the home base for numerous world powers during their summer tours in North America; Inter Milan’s visit to Sandy this July is the first step in that process.”

The Nerazzurri is a 108-year-old club that plays in Italy’s highest division, having never been relegated in its history. The club formally known as FC Internazionale Milano has won 18 league titles, 30 domestic trophies, seven Coppa Italia championships and five Italian Supercoppas. The black-and-blue stripes won five-straight Serie A titles from 2006-10, tied for the most all time.

The three-time UEFA Champions League winners will visit Utah just a few weeks after another international friendly, Mexico’s Santos Laguna and Club Tijuana on June 24. Inter Milan is the first European club to visit Rio Tinto Stadium since England’s Everton FC during the MLS All-Star Game in 2009.

“It is exciting to have one of the world’s premier soccer teams compete at Rio Tinto Stadium,” Utah Sports Commission CEO Jeff Robbins said in a statement. “Hosting Inter Milan will provide economic benefits and international exposure to Utah.”

Tickets go on sale to the general public June 17 at the stadium box office and RioTintoStadium.com.
