Utah baseball to play Ole Miss in Oxford Regional game

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah baseball will play regional host Ole Miss in the first game of the Oxford Regional after earning an automatic bid to the tournament.

Utah earned an automatic bid after winning the Pac-12 title Sunday, beating the Washington Huskies 21-7 in a dominant performance. The winner of the Ole Miss-Utah game will play the winner of either Tulane or Boston College.

Ole Miss is ranked No. 10 in the country and has a No. 5 RPI, with an overall 43-17 record. Ole Miss is tied with five other schools nationally for the most times hosting a regional at seven. Utah will play its first game of the regional tournament on Friday at 6 p.m. on ESPN3.

Utah last made an appearance in the NCAA tournament in 2009 where Utah won games against Georgia Southern and Gonzaga before losing its second game of regionals to Cal State Fullerton. Utah’s first lost of the tournament was also to Cal State Fullerton. Prior to the 2009 season, Utah last made an appearance in the tournament in 1960.

A total of four teams from the Pac-12 earned a bid to the tournament, including Arizona, Arizona State and Washington. Arizona will play Sam Houston State in the Lafayette Regional, Arizona State will play Gonzaga in the Fort Worth Regional, and Washington will play UC Santa Barbara in the Nashville Regional.

Also earning a bid from the state of Utah is Utah Valley University. The Wolverines will play the No. 8 overall seed LSU in the Baton Rouge Regional on Friday at 1 p.m. on ESPN3.

A total of 64 teams were slated to 16, four-team regional sites with double elimination beginning on June 3. Teams advancing from the regional site will move onto the Super Regionals, which is a best-of-three series beginning June 10. A final eight teams will move onto the College World Series, which begins on June 18.
