VERNAL — A Vernal man was killed and others were injured Friday afternoon after one car rear-ended another, pushing it into oncoming traffic, where it was hit again, officials said.
A Mitsubishi Eclipse was driving westbound on U.S. 40 near Vernal when it hit a Pontiac Grand Am, which was stopped and preparing to turn left onto the McCoy Flats Road. The Grand Am went into the eastbound lane, where a Sierra pickup hit it, according to Utah Highway Patrol.
The person driving the Eclipse was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, and the driver of the Grand Am was critically injured. A passenger in the Grand Am, Sandon Marshall, 19, was killed in the crash, police said.
Occupants of the pickup were taken to the hospital. The driver and passenger were in serious but stable condition and two other passengers had minor injuries, according to UHP.
The road was temporarily closed in both directions at 4000 West, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.
