SALT LAKE CITY — The Intermountain Healthcare board of trustees Friday announced its selection of Dr. A. Marc Harrison as the new president and CEO of the 22-hospital medical group.

Board Chairman Scott Anderson, CEO of Zions Bank, praised Harrison's experience as chief of international business development for Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and CEO of the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.

"Dr. Harrison has impressive experience and a proven track record of leading health organizations, and is immensely qualified to build on Intermountain’s legacy and oversee the organization as we continue the work of transforming health care to meet the challenges ahead," Anderson said in a statement released Friday.

Harrison, 52, will take over for Dr. Charles Sorenson, who retires in October.

The announcement concludes a national search for the new head of the health care system, which employs 1,300 physicians across 22 hospitals and 185 clinics.

Harrison is familiar with both Utah and the Intermountain Healthcare system. After medical school, he completed a residency and internship in pediatric critical care through the University of Utah School of Medicine, where he worked primarily in the critical care units of Primary Children's Hospital.

Harrison's wife, Dr. Mary Carole Harrison, served as chief resident in the same program.

A. Marc Harrison went on to serve as the chief medical operations officer for the Cleveland Clinic, where he also served as chairman of pediatric critical care.

He earned his undergraduate degree from Haverford College and a medical degree at Dartmouth Medical School. He later received a master's of medical management from Carnegie Mellon University.

Sorenson will stay on with Intermountain Healthcare as the founding director of the Intermountain Healthcare Leadership Institute, expected to open in 2018.
