MAGNA — A Magna man was charged Monday with shooting and killing his neighbor's pit bull.

Adam Cloward, 27, of Magna was charged in 3rd District Court with illegal discharge of a firearm, a third-degree felony; aggravated cruelty to an animal, a class A misdemeanor; and tampering with evidence, a class A misdemeanor.

On March 28, Unified police were called to the area of 8300 West and 3200 South on a report of a dog being shot.

Cloward originally told officers that he was walking his Chihuahua when a pit bull that he claimed was a neighborhood nuisance came up to his leg while barking at him, so he shot it, according to the charges.

When asked for a second written statement, Cloward changed his story to say the dog had actually tried to bite him, the charges state.

Other witnesses, however, told police that Cloward took his own dog into his house, then went back outside to shoo the pit bull away. Two witnesses said they watched Cloward walk from his driveway to a neighbor's property across the street "and began to tell the dog to go away," the charges state.

The witnesses told police that the dog started walking home, but then turned and barked and moved toward Cloward. They said "they are familiar with the pit bull and that his bark was a friendly bark, not a mean one," according to the charges.

Police say Cloward shot the dog, and then called it "stupid" and a few other expletives.
