SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake man was charged Friday with trying to hide a baggie of marijuana after crashing into and killing a motorcyclist.

Daniel Levert, 21, was charged in 3rd District Court with automobile homicide, a second-degree felony; obstructing justice, a third-degree felony; drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia, class B misdemeanors; and failure to yield, an infraction.

On April 19, Sigfried Meyer, 69, was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle when he was hit in the intersection of 2100 South and 600 West. Levert had "swerved in front of another eastbound car going very fast and continued left through the intersection where he hit Mr. Meyer," according to charging documents.

After the crash, witnesses saw Levert "get out of the vehicle and attempt to hide a baggie of marijuana," the charges state. He also allegedly tried to hide an apple he had allegedly used to smoke the marijuana.

Meyer suffered critical head trauma and was taken to a local hospital where he died two days later.

Bail for Levert was set at $250,000.
