SARATOGA SPRINGS — A school bus driver who was allegedly seen passed out near the bus last month with special needs students still inside has been charged with DUI and reckless endangerment.
Sherry Lund, 52, of Lehi, was transporting four special needs students and a bus aide on the afternoon of March 8 when police stopped her vehicle near the intersection of Pony Express and Redwood Road in Saratoga Springs. City spokesman Owen Jackson said police officers discovered she appeared impaired and smelled like alcohol. Her blood alcohol content was measured at 0.17, a little more than twice the legal limit, he said.
The person who reported Lund to the police said they saw her "unconscious on the side of the road," Jackson said last month.
Lund was charged Tuesday in 4th District Court with driving under the influence of alcohol and four counts of reckless endangerment, all class A misdemeanors.
The Alpine School District placed Lund on administrative leave the same day she was arrested. Lund resigned from her job March 10, district spokesman David Stephenson said Wednesday.
None of the students were ultimately harmed as a result of the alleged DUI, according to district officials.
Lund was out of custody Wednesday, jail records show. She is scheduled to appear in court in American Fork on May 31.
Prior to this week's charges, Lund had no significant criminal history in Utah, according to court records.
