ST. GEORGE — Say goodbye to the Red Storm and hello to the Trailblazers. Dixie State University is rebranding itself.
Officials at the school announced the change Monday, saying the name “Trailblazers” is representative of the school’s pioneering past and future.
“The Trailblazer identity is perfect for our university because it embodies the Dixie Spirit that is rooted in the southern Utah pioneers’ legacy of hard work, perseverance and commitment to one another,” DSU president Richard B. Williams said in a written statement.

The Trailblazers is one of several identities presented to the public as replacement options after research showed fans wanted a mascot they could better identify with. It was a clear favorite of the 5,000 people who participated in an online survey and among 50 focus groups, administrators said.
The Bison was selected as the embodiment of the new mascot because bison were "America’s original trailblazers," the statement said. Brooks is named after the school’s first student, Samuel Brooks.
