SALT LAKE CITY — During his Sunday morning address, President Thomas S. Monson of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced plans to build four more temples at the church’s 186th annual General Conference.

The temples will be built in Harare, Zimbabwe; Quito, Ecuador; Belém, Brazil; and Lima, Peru. Lima will be getting its second temple, the first one having been dedicated in 1986.

The LDS Church recently dedicated its 150th such building in March with the Provo City Center Temple. The four temples announced Sunday will bring the total number of LDS temples under construction or development to 27.

The temple planned for Zimbabwe will be the first in the country. There are currently three operating temples in the African continent with one under construction and two others announced in addition to Harare. Ecuador will get its second temple while Brazil — which is home to approximately 1.3 million members of the church according to Mormon Newsroom — has six operating temples and two under construction, including the recently announced Belém temple.

LDS temples are considered by members to be the most sacred places on earth and are deemed a “house of the Lord.” While Sunday services are held at neighborhood meetinghouses, temples operate throughout the week and are closed Sundays.
