OREM — Delta's streak of seven-straight Class 2A state wrestling championships may be in question.

South Summit surged to a first-day finish of 117 points Friday at Utah Valley's UCCU Center, just one and a half points behind the longtime champion Rabbits.

Still, the school from the West Desert won't bow out of the tussle for its 34th overall wrestling title without a fight — and Delta coach Jason Thomas expects the fight to go on to the very end.

"South Summit is always good," said Thomas, who lost five state champions from last year's team that won state by 64.5 points. "Coming in, we knew we were in for a battle. We've got a young team.

"I expect it to be really close. I expected it to come right down to the last match that is wrestled Saturday night."

The Rabbits placed 11 wrestlers through to Saturday morning's semifinals, including defending state champion Jason Hatch at 152 pounds. The junior captured a pair of pins Friday, including a fall in 1:47 in a quarterfinal bout with Millard's Wesly West.

"We rely on him a lot; we kind of expect him to go out and get a pin every time," Thomas said of Hatch. "He embraces that. He's a kid that doesn't get rattled, doesn't feel the pressure; he just goes out and wrestles.

"We lean on him pretty heavily. He's a good kid."

5A STATE WRESTLING

Delta also got extra points at 285 pounds, where both heavyweights advanced to the semifinals for the Rabbits. JV wrestler Bradden Davis knocked off South Summit's Porter Fox, 13-6, while Brett Walker won by fall in just 19 seconds over North Sevier's Dakota Davis to set up a potential all-Rabbit final.

"To have our JV kid knock off a varsity kid from South Summit, that's huge," Thomas said. "That's their role; one guy has to knock other teams out, and that was the plan."

South Summit was led by three-time state champion Matt Lee (126), one of 10 Wildcat wrestlers to advance to Saturday's semifinals.

Wrestling resumes Saturday with 2A and 3A semifinal matches at 10:30 a.m. The finals for all three classifications are scheduled for 5:10 p.m. at the UCCU Center.

Class 3A

Zack Bingham (106), Holden Richards (126), Cooper Skinner (138), Kaygen Canfield (145), Bryken Jensen (160), Jordan Watson (195), Nathan Heppler (220) and Josh Madsen (285) each advanced to the quarterfinals to help Bear River take a lead after the opening day in the 3A tourney.

The Bears took a 15-point lead on second-place Juab, 110-95, following the first two rounds of the consolation bracket. Cedar City is third with 72, followed by Morgan (69) and Desert Hills (67.5).

Class 1A

Duchesne stormed to a 163-117.5 lead over second-place Altamont after the first two rounds of the 1A tournament.

The Eagles placed nine wrestlers through to Saturday's finals in Colby Harper (106), David Vantassell (113), Matt Taylor (132), Stockton Moat (145) Steven Skewes (152), Gatlin Thompson (170), Shaydon Summarell (182), Aaron Verduzco (220) and Morgan Smith (285).

Panguitch is third (105), followed by Monticello (82) and Milford (43.5).
