SALT LAKE CITY — A resolution that would encourage bringing the Olympics back to Utah is one step closer to passing the Utah Legislature.

SCR12 was heard by the Senate Economic Development and Workforce Services Committee on Friday.

The sponsor, Senate Majority Whip Stuart Adams, R-Layton, said Utah is ready to host another Olympics because of the preparations that went into the last one.

"I think with the venues that are here, the infrastructure that we built and the way we've maintained that infrastructure, there's many who think that we're, perhaps, ready and poised to host another Olympics," Adams said.

He also cited the athletes that train in Utah and the sporting events that have been held in the state since the Olympics as good reasons for Utah to host the games again.

"Utah will stand 'ready, willing, and able' to welcome the world back" if the opportunity arises, the resolution says.

It would also encourage support of the national and international Olympic committees, Adams said, regardless of whether they choose Salt Lake City to host or not.

Senate Minority Whip Karen Mayne, D-Kearns, said she supports the resolution because she's seen the benefits the previous Olympics have had in her district, which is home to the Olympic Oval.

The resolution passed the committee unanimously and will move to the full Senate.
