OREM — An Orem mother has been charged with abandoning two small children while she went out drinking.

Haili Marie Smith, 25, was charged last week with two counts of child abandonment, a third-degree felony.

Orem police were called early in the morning of Dec. 13 when a 4-year-old child, who was not dressed for the weather, was found "wandering around outside, crying and calling for his mother," according to charging documents.

Officers located the boy's apartment, where they found a 7-month-old child and an alarm going off.

"During the time that the police were trying to sort things out, (Smith) walked up and the 4-year-old ran to her," the charges state.

The woman had been drinking, according to police, and claimed that a neighbor was supposed to be watching the children using a baby monitor. Police discovered, however, that the neighbor was out of state at the time.

An initial court appearance for Smith is set for March 22.
