WEST VALLEY — Police are investigating a reported shooting after a man with a gunshot wound in his back stumbled into a West Valley smoke shop Saturday.

Employees and patrons of One Stop Smoke Shop at 4645 S. 4000 West were shocked when the man walked in and collapsed on the floor.

"He's a regular," said employee Steven Sudweeks. "We don't know his name, but he comes in here buying cigars all the time. He's a nice guy, too."

Sudweeks said another employee called 911 while others applied pressure to the man's wound and helped him stay awake until officers and paramedics arrived.

"He wasn't bleeding very much at first," Sudweeks said. "A little later he started to bleed pretty bad."

West Valley Police Lt. Dalan Taylor said the 31-year-old man was in serious condition when he was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

"He wasn't able to give us a whole lot of information, so we're not exactly sure what occurred at this point," Taylor said. "We believe the shooting occurred in this general area, but it's a possibility that it didn't."

Taylor said officers had not found any witnesses to what had happened, so investigators do not have any suspects.

"We'll know more once detectives speak to him at the hospital," Taylor said.

Shortly before 10 p.m., Taylor said police didn't have any additional information because the man's condition had worsened to critical and he was taken into surgery.

"From the information we have, I don't think this is a random thing," he said. "I would bet there's a lot more to the story, we just haven't been able to get it yet."
