KEARNS — A family in Kearns was displaced Saturday after a fire engulfed their home.

"We expect it's probably a complete loss," Unified Fire Authority Battalion Chief Brian Anderton said of the home located near 4500 West and 4900 South. He estimated losses at $125,000.

The chief said an elderly couple and their adult son lived together in the home; no one was injured in the fire.

At the time the fire was called in at 4:53 p.m., the parents were attending a family party down the street while their son was in the home, Anderton said.

"He had gotten out of the home before crews got here," the chief reported. "When we got here, the house was already heavily engulfed in flames."

Anderton said crews were able to extinguish the fire, but "almost everything on the inside was burned out."

"Everything is destroyed," he said.

After fire officials conducted an investigation and interviewed the family members — including the son who was in the home at the time the fire broke out — Anderton said crews don't believe the fire to be suspicious.

"We believe it started around the fireplace and that it was accidental in nature," he said.

The chief said the American Red Cross in Utah will be helping the three family members find a place to stay for the night.
